Resilience is the name given to the on-going process by virtue of which people manage to go through the difficult times in their lives. These difficult times may be anything e.g. major change in life, loss of employment, serious illness and similar other traumatic experiences.

Though different people tend to react differently to a similar situation yet one thing is common to all that is people adapt well with the passage of time. So what is it which enables people to overcome the life changing situations? It is resilience!

Being resilient does not mean that the individual will not go through distress or difficulty as resilient individuals go through the same level of stress and grief as ordinary people do. However, what differentiates them from others is how they react to the situation.

Though certain individuals are naturally more resilient than others yet resilience is a trait that can be learned and developed. Let’s take a look into the factors which influence resilience along with a few resilience building strategies.

Factors which Influence Resilience

Many factors influence the level of resilience in individuals including

  • Supportive and caring relationships both within and outside family
  • Positive outlook of life
  • Confidence in your own strengths and positives
  • Trust in your abilities
  • Ability to manage strong and overwhelming feelings

Resilience Building Strategies

As all humans are different therefore, the resilience building strategies that may work for one may not necessarily work for the other. Below we will take a look into the top resilience building strategies.

·      Build Connections

Emotional support can help you become more resilient. Therefore, build connections and obtain support from those around you be it your close and reliable family members or friends.

Many people feel better off when they opt to volunteer for social causes while some feel better off once they connect themselves with their faith.

·      Avoid Viewing the Crisis as Insurmountable Situation/Problem

Though crisis is not within your control yet how you react to them is within your control. One of the best approaches in time of crisis especially emotional crisis is to take it one day at a time. Since you never know what the future holds for you, you can hope that the best out there is waiting for you.

Time is a great healer and though tough circumstances do not last tough people do.
