Edhi Foundation Pakistan has the honor of holding the Guinness record for being the World’s largest volunteer ambulance organization” since 1997.
So how did Edhi Foundation go onto bag this honor? The answer is the dedication of Abdul Sattar Edhi who dedicated all his life to provide ambulance services, shelter homes, free medical care, orphanages, emergency centers/services, education, handicapped centers, air ambulance centers, animal centers, morgues and drug rehabilitation services, blood and drug bank along with national and international relief efforts.
However, let’s not overlook the role of Bilquis Edhi Abdul Sattar Edhi’s wife in the journey of Edhi Foundation Pakistan who along with Abdul Sattar Edhi dedicated all her life to providing services to the destitute and unprivileged section of the society.
Abdul Sattar Edhi only had two pair of dresses and while he would wear one he would wash the other with his own hands to be worn later. Perhaps the factor which set apart Edhi Foundation from all was that he never accepted aid from non-Pakistani organizations and never had an agenda.
Abdul Sattar Edhi would sit at streets asking people to give him donation and the Pakistani nation never disappointed him. People would flock around him to give him donations and he continued to serve Pakistan even when he was gravely sick.
Unlike others Abdul Sattar Edhi declined the offer to go abroad for treatment and preferred to remain in Pakistan for his treatment and die among his own people.
However, Abdul Sattar Edhi services for Pakistan did not go unnoticed and Abdul Sattar Edhi on his death received a state funeral, being the first civilian to have received this honor.
Today, even after his death the Edhi Foundation Pakistan continues to serve Pakistan and the Pakistan nation especially the unprivileged section of the society.
